It’s Trade Deadline Day! We’ll cover all trade rumors & moves regarding to the Pittsburgh Penguins & the NHL in general throughout the entire day!
Happy Trade Deadline Day!!!
Less than 8 hours until the trade deadline! Will the Penguins and GM Jim Rutherford make another trade or is our roster set for the rest of the season and the playoffs??
Despite being the most active franchise on the Trade Deadline Day since 1980, limited Cap Space (around $100 000 per Mike Colligan) will likely force the Penguins to stay quiet this time! I don’t expect that there will be a lot of activity regarding to the Penguins, barring some big surprises!
However: The Trade Deadline isn’t over, until it’s over. Never rule out anything!
It already appears like the Penguins want to make any kind of trade.
Who might get traded in order to free up the needed cap space?
– Robert Bortuzzo
– Beau Bennett
– Brandon Sutter
– Brian Dumoulin
UPDATE (1) – 9:30 AM:
Jeff Petry – a player which name was linked to the Pittsburgh Penguins as well, during the last couple of weeks – is off the market, as he has just been traded to the Montreal Canadiens.
Are the Penguins now interested in acquiring Calgary Flames defenseman Kris Russell?? I hope they’re NOT !!! The Penguins have literally no need for another low end defensman. They should rather play Derrick Pouliot, Simon Despres and Robert Bortuzzo!
Will the Toronto Maple Leafs finally (be able to) trade Phil Kessel & Dion Phaneuf?! It appears like they’re are trying hard to get some deals done! It further appears that the Detroit Red Wings are interested in Phaneuf!
UPDATE (2) – 10:00 AM:
It appears that the Montreal Canadiens aren’t done dealing yet!
Furthermore it seems like there are some teams interested in Arizona Coyotes defenseman Zbynek Michalek – St. Louis Blues amongst the teams which have inquired about Michalek!
Thoughts and comments on the rumors that the Penguins have inquired the Calgary Flames regarding to defenseman Kris Russell.
UPDATE (3) – 10:15 AM:
Anaheim Ducks, Dallas Stars, Detroit Red Wings and Colorado Avalanche amongst teams interested in Toronto Maple Leafs defenseman Dion Phaneuf!
Seriously? I personally wouldn’t trade for Dion Phaneuf!
UPDATE (4) – 10:30 AM:
It is rumored that the Montreal Canadiens are currently working on a huge package offer in order to trade for Toronto Maple Leafs Phil Kessel !!!
The Pittsburgh Penguins aren’t close to any deal yet, but they’re still exploring all possibilities!
UPDATE (5) – 10:45 AM:
Are the Penguins now interested in Colorado Avalanche defenseman Jan Hejda? Seems like Jim Rutherford is really exploring all possibilities!
Furthermore it’s appears that Zbynek Michalek to the St. Louis Blues is a done deal.
UPDATE (6) – 11:00 AM:
All the “hockey insiders” catching up to the Michalek to the Blues news now. Thanks to Hockeyy Insiderr we reported about that deal 17 minutes earlier than everybody else!
Meanwhile the Boston Bruins lost another “trade battle” ….
UPDATE (7) – 11:15 AM:
Will Dion Phaneuf be on another team at the end of this day? There are still a lot of rumors floating around regarding to teams being interested in acquiring him …
UPDATE (8) – 11:45 AM:
The asking price in order to acquire Dion Phaneuf might be too high for the Detroit Red Wings …
Are the Montreal Canadiens close on a deal in order to acquire Jordan Eberle from the Edmonton Oilers??
UPDATE (9) – 12:30 AM:
UPDATE (10) – 12:45 AM:
Around 2 hours left …
Don’t rule out a Penguins trade yet! It appears that they really might make a trade before the Trade Deadline!
UPDATE (11) – 1:00 PM:
General Manager Jim Rutherford will meet with the media at 3:15 PM at Consol Energy Center!
UPDATE (12) – 1:30 PM:
TRADE ALERT :
The Pittsburgh Penguins have traded defenseman Robert Bortuzzo and a 2016 7th round draft pick to the St. Louis Blues in exchange for defenseman Ian Cole!
But GM Jim Rutherford might not be done dealing …
UPDATE (13) – 1:45 PM:
UPDATE (14) – 2:30 PM:
Will the Pittsburgh Penguins re-assign rookie defenseman Derrick Pouliot to the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins ?? No panick, if that’s the case! It would just be a “paper move” ??
UPDATE (15) – 2:55 PM:
TRADE ALERT :
The Pittsburgh Penguins have acquired former Pittsburgh Penguin Ben Lovejoy from the Anaheim Ducks in exchange for defenseman Simon Despres …. I personally don’t like this trade at all. Simon Despres is a 23 year old defenseman with a lot of potential, who will improve once he is not playing with anchor Rob Scuderi anymore! He has another year at $900 000 and is even then still an RFA!
Sure, Ben Lovejoy became a solid player & will fit to Johnston’s system. However, Despres has a lot more value than just being traded straight up for Ben Lovejoy…
UPDATE (16) – 4:30 PM:
Thoughts and comments on both trades, made by Jim Rutherford right before the Trade Deadline:
1) Robert Bortuzzo and a 2016 7th round draft pick for defenseman Ian Cole:
2) Simon Despres for Ben Lovejoy:
All the best to Robert Bortuzzo and Simon Despres!
Thanks for following my Trade Deadline Day Coverage!
